Speak Japanese
So you want to speak Japanese. Here are some tips for you before beginning your adventure into learning to speak Japanese:
If you’re going to Japan for a vacation, you should spend your time learning some survival-type phrases. My top ten list would include, “Where is the bathroom?”, along with the standard Yes, no, please and thank-you. My point isn’t to teach these to you, but instead emphasize that you should practice saying them many times, and jot them onto flashcards. Carry the cards with you, if necessary. But learn those few top travel phrases.
If you’re wanting to learn Japanese for more than the basic travel phrases — if you truly are interested in speaking the language and understanding it — then there are two key steps for you:
* Find the right course for you. Honestly, this will take some investment on your part, of time at least, if not money. For example, you might consider starting by going to your local library and seeing what courses they have available. (This would be an investment of time, not money so much.) The library is a good place to start because you can try numerous courses for free. The downside is that the courses are usually older and/or in bad condition. But still, it’s a good start.
So, that’s the first step to truly speaking Japanese….finding the right course, or courses. And the second step?
* Make a commitment to put in the time. I personally wouldn’t insist on studying every day. That’s too much. You need time away, at first. Plus, if you set the goal of studying every single day and then something comes up and you can’t study that day, you feel terrible, like you broke a promise. So take the pressure off. Commit to five days a week, or even just every other day. But stick to it. And give it time. Japanese honestly is no harder than any other language (to speak, at least) but it simply requires an investment of time.
